The Lagos State Government has said that it would begin issuing International Driver’s Permits to all vehicle owners in the state in December 2022. Adebayo Fashola, the state’s director of vehicle inspection, made this known while receiving Abdulhafiz Toriola, the permanent secretary of the transportation ministry.

The VIS director stated that the process of issuing international driver’s permits and vehicle certificates has been concluded. According to him, the regulations in the TSRL 2018 are in line with international standards. He said that the documents are required to be issued according to the class or description of the vehicle and other relevant documents.
According to Fashola, private vehicles that are five years old from the date of their manufacture will no longer be subjected to the mandatory computerized inspection carried out by the VIS. He explained that prior to the implementation of the regulations, pre-registration inspections would have been carried out on these types of vehicles. In order to avoid this, the owners of these privately-owned cars should get an exemption certificate from the VIS.
He stated that the decision to exclude privately-owned cars from the mandatory inspection was one of the ways to prevent over-clogged vehicle inspection centres in the state. Fashola also said that the VIS had started to enforce the safety standards and documentation requirements of the regulations on commercial vehicles in the state.
He asked the state’s law enforcers to assist in ensuring that the roads in Lagos are free of dilapidated vehicles. The permanent secretary of the ministry, Abdulhafiz Toriola, urged the officials of the VIS to carry out their duties in line with the regulations and international best practices in order to ensure that all motor vehicles operating in the state meet safety standards. He also urged the officers to carry out new initiatives aimed at improving their operations.
